Per la prima volta al mondo un gruppo di ricercatori è riuscito a creare in laboratorio, partendo da cellule staminali embrionali, cellule che sono in grado di produrre mielina. Si tratta della principale proteina che costituisce la guaina che ricopre le cellule nervose. Ad annunciarlo sulla rivista "Development" un gruppo di ricercatori della Wisconsin University guidati da Su-Chun Zhang.
La perdita o la rottura della guaina mielinica è una delle principali caratteristiche di una serie di malattie tra cui anche la sclerosi multipla. Fino a oggi i test condotti in questa direzione avevano dato esiti negativi. Al contrario infatti di quanto è stato dimostrato con cellule di topo, nell'uomo non è mai stato possibile arrivare a questi risultati.
